Providential coincidence

http://worldofdankku.files.wordpress.com/2007/10/black-rose.jpg

Yesterday i received a package in the mail - and as most of you know i'm sure, receiving something like this in the mail makes you feel like the happiest person in the world. it was from amazon.com, and so i knew it had to be a book, which made my heart beat faster. it was a gift, just because, from a dear friend of mine.

firstly, thank you Salah. i am in love with the book so far. it's titled The Water of Life. i won't ruin the book for you (so far it is a must read - daddy you'd like it), but let me just say that there are times when you feel connected with someone, and the feeling is just so powerful that you momentarily find yourself separated from things. you will your arms and legs to move, but you find yourself suspended and looking down at a body you recognize as your own. and your spirit is left to traverse the timeless expanses of space to connect with someone else. this sensation grew on me, the more and more i read this book. it was as if everything that i had been wanting and feeling, subconsciously and consciously, was suddenly found in physical form in front of my eyes.

i had a dream two nights ago - i was a gardener, positioned next to millions and millions of other gardeners stationed to infinity to my right. in front of me was a rose bush that likewise extended into the horizon. at once, as if all touched by the same moment, we all began to prune this bush; and with a little blade we all set at removing the thorns. as i read this book, this dream touched my inner Eye and exploded into reality. i have various inklings as to the import of this dream, and i may share them as they begin to take shape.

you know, it's also a really funny thing. i may have said this before, but poems that i wrote a year ago (during which time they held no particular significance to the reality of my life) are beginning to have some semblance of meaning to my present state and the truths that i find. here's the one i remembered as i read this book:

Expectant Moons

I

The hand that reaches out has no
Print, no mark – only the never-ending
Silkiness of dusk and twilight.

It is not from the grave, for cemeteries
Are too rough to hold such a thing; and corpses
Too dry to produce this outcropping of mist and shade.

II

Soundless young girls emit a cry, as if to say
We are poor in love – of course they remain
Unanswered by most, except from the

Colorful tapestry they knit in their wombs
That answers back with rhythm and warmth –
It is not a parasitic love, but one of unsaid

Words and furtive glances. It is a pattern
Drawn of fjords and glaciers, and the steadied
Patience of quilted farmland and flowerbeds.

III

We cannot escape the sensuality of our kind,
And I await the fall of romantic empires
And the music of artistic identity –I close

My eyes with calloused hands crusted over
By the heat of passion and suffering; and silently
Bless the world for this garment of roses.

News!

http://bahai-egypt.blogspot.com/2008/01/victory-for-human-rights-in-egypt.html

Cairo's Court of Administrative Justice has just ruled now in favor of the Egyptian Baha'is, allowing them to obtain identification documents and birth certificates. The verdict opens the door for the Egyptian Baha'is to leave the religious classification section blank (enter dashes or "other") on all identification documents and other official documents including birth certificates, according to the court's ruling. The final choice between these allowed options will be determined later. In effect, the Egyptian Baha'is will now be able to enjoy all their rights of citizenship in their homeland.

"We urge the regime to release all individuals held without due process and a fair trial, including the three young Baha'i teachers being held in a Ministry of Intelligence detention center in Shiraz," said Sean McCormack, a spokesman for the State Department on 23 January 2008.

yet another pad

this morning, before a meeting, i found myself looking for my notepad. when i did find it, underneath a stack of papers, i saw that i had just one more sheet left. i looked at it in amazement. when did i already finish yet another pad of paper!? i flipped through it in the hope that i would see many blank pages which i could still use, but was left crestfallen. you see, i've begun to mark my life here by my notepads. and as i fill each one with copious amounts of information and reminders, my departure draws that much closer. it'll be quite interesting at the end, when i flip back through all my spent pages and see what i've done; what i finished and accomplished; what was left incomplete; the reminders that i left for my future self...and if i actually listened to myself then (oh no he di'nt! he did not just pull out the analogy?! notepads = stages of life - such cliché ;) )

it's hailing and raining outside - it's the kind of day that makes me just want to curl up with a book and chai...and read.

i acquired a new couch yesterday for my room (so pops you have something to sleep on :) ). well, it's not actually new...it was in kent's room for a while, but it sure is comfortable.

my popcorn story

I had somehow blocked this memory. Shaadi, thanks for bringing it back. Toward the end of my last semester, I had a bit of a shocking experience. Here is a transcript of the conversation I had with Shaadi, soon after it happened.

*******************************

Shaadi: Good morning!
Geoffrey: Oh yeah, ok so yesterday I had to work till 5pm in my office. Around 4:30 the Political Science secretary usually leaves, and today she came to my office and asked if I would sit in the office till 5 since I was going to be there anyway. I said I would. So I gathered my stuff and went to go sit in the office for the last half hour of the day. I sat there at the computer for about 20 minutes doing stuff, and then I remembered that I had a bag of popcorn in my office that I had been wanting to cook for a while, and so I thought this would be a good time to put it in the microwave...cook it, and then eat it on my way out. I thought it was a great idea. So about 4:55 I put the popcorn in. It needed about 5 minutes to cook, so I thought great it will work out perfect
Shaadi: lol
Geoffrey: So about 4:56 I had this sudden need to go to the bathroom
Shaadi: Oh gosh.
Geoffrey: So, I headed out of the office, closing and locking the door....now two things: firstly, I’ve been stuffed up lately, and my sense of smell has been off. But then also at that same exact time the dean of my college was heading down the hall out of her office. And as I was heading to the bathroom, we crossed. And just before we passed each other, she stopped and said "do you smell something". Now I really had to go the bathroom...so I thought the best way to get pass get passed her was to agree and then move on
Shaadi: Oh no.
Geoffrey: So I was like "yeah I do"...and she says "well it smells like burnt popcorn"...NOW none of this clicked in my head and I just shrugged my shoulders and just went on to the bathroom, and she left confused about this strange smell. I got out of the bathroom, and then I got a call on my cell, and I usually don't get signal inside so I headed out to the front of the building to take the call. So about 4:59 I went back to the office. I stuck the key in the door, turned the handle and white smoke started pouring, I MEAN POURING, out of the office curling all round me, and the whole office was completely white. I stood there stunned.

Shaadi: lol

(my University is right behind this hill)

Geoffrey: I didn't know what to do...I was in shock
Shaadi: You're a slow one aren't you, the burnt popcorn just didn’t register
Geoffrey: And then I remembered my popcorn, so I ran to the microwave which was throwing out tons and tons of smoke...got the BURNING HOT BAG OF POPCORN AND RAN OUT TO THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING and threw it into a trashcan out front
Shaadi: lol
Geoffrey: I then spent the next two hours trying to air out this room, waving my arms, plates, creating circulation, turning on fans
Shaadi: How long did you put that thing for, 10 minutes!?
Geoffrey: Now it wasn't until about 10 min after I threw out the popcorn that the alarm went off; that was pretty bad
Shaadi: lol..Oh goodness. Popcorn-3 minutes or less.
Geoffrey: It said 5.
Shaadi: Goodness…yeah you always have to stand over popcorn
Geoffrey: But the thing with this microwave that I didn't remember is that it cooks things in half the time that they say they are supposed to be in for.
Shaadi: Once you stop hearing the popping...it needs to come on out. Yea, oh Geoffrey...
Geoffrey: Yeah, so
Shaadi: lol that’s hilarious
Geoffrey: I almost burned down the building in my final semester
Shaadi: I can just see it in my head playing out
Geoffrey: It was so funny
Shaadi: Good thing everyone was gone.
Geoffrey: I called my boss around 6pm to explain to her what happened and she laughed the whole time
Shaadi: lol.
Geoffrey: I am going to be such a laughing stock next week
Shaadi: well gooood.
Geoffrey: lol
Shaadi: And I thought I was the slow one.
Geoffrey: I just stood there; it had been a long day.
Shaadi: lol
Geoffrey: I was so shocked
Shaadi: I bet.
Geoffrey: So yeah, that’s my funny story :)

staff visit

this past friday was a staff visit to the Masion of Mazra'ih. fortunately, we were able to organize a car out there with a lady named Pat Smith. Wonderfully happy, upbeat person. Roya wasn't able to make it that day, so Lucia, Khat, Hami (her brother) and I piled into a car and wound our way out there. much of the ride was spent in silence, partly because the experience of riding in a smooth warm car is a treat that does not come that often. hami, who is particularly garrulous, spent much of the journey in a comfy reverie. it was a beautiful visit. here are some photos (thanks to khat - and yes, i've shaved my head - thanks to hami-and am simultaneously much more comfortable but cold headed)...it is freezing out here sometimes! i had no idea:

Part III

Page 124

The taste of blood and sweat mingled with that of the apple tinted smoke that permeated the room. Red dripped from his nose and brow, oozing down his check and neck. Geoffrey, no longer able to open his eyes, spat out the dry blood that began to collect and harden in his mouth. The cold and dark of the cellar room finally began to settle on him as some of his senses began to return. He didn’t know how long he’d been here. It felt like days. [Chinese] So, how do you feel after an hour and a half of torture? rasped a deadly voice from the dark. Whoever it was, they were obviously a smoker. A second person, a woman, translated from another side of the room. Geoffrey could barely open his mouth, and when he tried, trails of blood and saliva prevented him from forming words. All he could do was let out a grown of utter pain and exhaustion – the beatings had been intense, and he remembered vaguely being hit by a book. The man began to speak again, and Geoffrey was able to discern one name: Leilinguist. How he despised her now. The man started to speak again, “It must be Chinese” Geoffrey thought; and then he heard the familiar bubble of water boiling, another gust of apple flavored smoke filled his nostrils, and Geoffrey realized – Rayvahid!

Geoffrey heard them walk away, but heard more than two pairs of feet moving around and surmised that there must have been more people watching. These were his last thoughts as darkness descended. Hours ticked by, and the slow but steady sun began to rise. There was one window in the furthest most corner of the room, and it was through here that a single ray of light found its way into the cellar to penetrate the eye of Geoffrey and awaken him from his painful sleep. As he slowly roused himself to sit up prop his back against the wall, he was finally able to look around. He scanned the room with half open eyes, and suddenly let out a gasp! Someone else lay gagged and tied, like a roped calf, in the far corner of the room across from him. He’d never seen this man before. But with his shaved head and slight features he looked like a small child.

Geoffrey crawled and rolled his way over to the small figure to get closer – he was fast asleep, but his breath came slow and forced. Blood covered most of his head, and Geoffrey was sure his clothes must be originally some other color. A small book lay beside him – it too was caked in blood, but Geoffrey was able to make out the title: “Bleed for the Father; The Life and Struggles of Houtan”. Geoffrey was astounded! Why did this individual have a book concerning the same subject as he!? The broken spine of the book allowed the small paperback to rest open. Page 124 lay before him, and he read the first lines:

Even as a young teenager, Houtan was a fighter and the most noble of all boys in the small village of Hermanivka. He welcomed a battle and always came out victorious. He also loved apples and often helped his neighbors and friends during the harvest season…

Geoffrey was confused. This description did not fit at all with the biography that he was reading. In his, Houtan of Hermanivka was described as brutal and vicious, but also easily manipulated. One paragraph in his book described him as if he was “a blind, red duck with razor sharp teeth, being led around by an invisible hand”.

Footsteps echoed down the corridor, and Geoffrey panicked and scurried back to his original spot and feigned sleep. The door burst open causing Geoffrey to automatically jump, as person upon person filed into the room. He stared with wide eyes has his brain finally began to click and recognizable faces flooded his sight. There, standing before him, scowling and jeering, were Luciqua, Laurendo, Rafita and Aaroneous.

“Ooooooooooh, someone’s awake. How did you sleep you little slobber box. You’ve wet your whole front”, mocked Luciqua.

Laurendo guffawed from behind her.

“Rafita! What?....why?...what are you doing!” Geoffrey shouted.

“Eet looks like you’ve got ze rong end of ze steek cuz” whispered Rafita, as he crouched in front of Aaroneous. “Ju mest rownd wit ze rong guys”.

Geoffrey could not believe his eyes. Rafita his cousin, leering at him in a way a wolf does a lamb.

Suddenly, Aaroneous reared back and ran into Geoffrey at full speed, pinning him against the wall.

“You like that punk, eh?” Aaroneous shouted into his ear.

“No, no I don’t” Geoffrey shouted back “get off!”.

“Erroneous!” Aaroneous screamed back “You’d better zip it eh, or you’ll end up like your precious friend here!”

“What, I don’t even know who that is” said Geoffrey

“You don’t know!” squealed Luciqua with joy and malice.

Laurendo sniggered from behind her.

“Eets jur preshus Dan” said Rafita who was now hanging from the pipe that extended across the ceiling.

“Who” said Geoffrey confused... he knew no Dan.

“Dan!” shouted Rafita who had flipped upside down and was hanging by his legs.

“Not Dan you freakin monkey…eh. It’s your beloved Don” said Aaroneous.

And it hit Geoffrey like a bag of sand, the kind that you put up to prevent floods, that this small, bald little figure trembling in the corner was none other than Don Joe, Papa Joe…The Joe. “What barbarians!” thought Geoffrey. It had come to this. The most wise and learned figures of the town were being taken out. What did this mean? And Geoffrey became suddenly very scared. Don Joe was who he was going to go for answers. Papa Joe was going to make it alright! After Amy “the one woman army” had turned him away, Geoffrey had been trying to think of other ways to see him. Now he saw that they were both prisoners, and each had to rely on the other – that’s assuming of course that he would ever wake up.

Geoffrey thought about Vafalusive also. The last thing he remembered they had been drinking tea with Jaredo, Bubs and Vafalusive as they explained everything. That’s when hell broke loose. But now Geoffrey found himself in a situation that looked grimmer than he could have ever imagined. Those he counted as friends were either taken out, lost, or had turned on him. The ties that had bonded them were slowly dimming away, and the covenant of trust and brotherhood was becoming a thing to be relegated to the past. This was the history of man, he said sardonically to himself. He found it somewhat hard to believe that this was actually being played out in such a real way – he never thought it would come to this.

As the four argued over what they should do next, Geoffrey started to feel extremely ill - no sleep for days and that pizza couldn’t have helped. He never gets one with everything. He shouldn’t have eaten Kentonion’s stupid “gift” – but then again, it’s always dangerous to refuse something that Kentonion gives to you. Either he wants you to do something, or he wants something from you – regardless, he’s a treacherous man to cross. Bickering back and fourth, no one saw Geoffrey as he writhed in pain as wave up on wave of pain began to shoot through his stomach and up his chest. “What had he eaten” he thought. He vomited once…he vomited twice…this was enough to elicit a smirk of glee from Laurendo, who then turned back to the argument…and on the third time, as he hurled into the corner, something came out – a small case 1 millimeter in length. It appeared to be metal of some kind, but it definitely was something to be opened as Geoffrey saw the hinges on the side. Geoffrey realized it would be too dangerous to open there so he stowed it away in the inside pocket of his waist coat.

Footsteps were heard coming down the hallway, and Sholeshabang peered in. “Hey, you screw-ups, he wants you all upstairs. Have you gotten the information yet?” she asked.

“Chill out” said Luciqua “we’re working on it. We just thought we’d have our fun first”

Laurendo grinned evilly from behind Luciqua’s shoulder, causing horrific shivers turn run down Geoffrey’s spine.

“Chill out...chill out…yeah, sure, I’ll pass that message along”, mocked Sholeshabang as she turned to leave.

“Yeaaah. Time for some fun” whispered Aaroneous as he cracked his knuckles and bared his teeth.

As the band of four miscreants closed in on Geoffrey, no one noticed three things: Sholehshabang’s steps had stopped prematurely, the Don had disappeared, and something, softly and gently, began to float down out of thin air, cutting through the musky apple scented room, to land in the midst of everyone – a paper, but more specifically…a map.

it is yet another solemn day in haifa. i planned to go running this morning at about 6am, but the rain softly led me back to bed. we have a new flatmate -aaron. pictures will come soon i'm sure, but it is a good move.

kent, aaron and i all left the flat about the same time, but with only two umbrellas. the rain had lessened at that point, so i just gave mine to kent since he had farther to walk to get to work - and so i set off, walking through the puddled streets and sidewalks, dodging the cascading water and listening to 'cry me a river' on my ipod.

word of the day: tumefaction (swelling)....use it in a sentence:

because of the rain, my walls are in a state of tumefaction....

by eating too much, too quickly, her belly became tumefacted (?)

i'll get there...

ok, i just grossed myself out. i was looking for a picture that i could post to depict tumefaction...um, yeah, just don't google that word if you don't want to be disturbed.

what an unfortunate condition....(sigh)...

becoming a man

1) my dream was fulfilled, and i had shawarma last night

2) navid's dream was also finally fulfilled. he is finally a man (yes, i'm referring to his facial hair):

shawarma

this has been a bullet point day...and unfortunately, all i've had on my mind for that last 4 hours is how much i would really love a shawarma right now.

some of the bullets:

The International Convention is gearing up

I volunteered in the gardens this past Friday - it was so wonderful being outside, weeding and raking leaves...finally able to get some sun.

Study session tonight (minus Virginia unfortunately) will be focusing on my study of the Tablet of the Holy Mariner

I cleaned my room last night...well, i didn't just clean it, i reodered my home life. so much better, you would not believe...was up till about 1 doing that.

Can't wait for an irish cream coffee tonight from Greg's.

Walked down the Terraces last night...I was the only one on them, so I sat down, looked up at the sky and took stock of my life...complete with mystical stirrings.

this morning

"...a world subject to the immutable law of change and decay..."
